Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014) - Review

Greetings fellow film-maniacs!

My name is Matthew Godsey and this is Matt's Movie Babble.  This is my first blog, and it is going to be all about movie news and reviews.  Now I don't have a Ph.D in film studies, but like you wonderful readers, I am an avid film fan and I finally want my voice to be heard.

DISCLAIMER: All reviews, unless noted beforehand, are spoiler free.

For my first post, I decided to review the first major feature of the year, which happens to be the newest installment in the ever dying Paranormal Activity franchise, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.

The synopsis for The Marked Ones is as follows:
A young man named Jesse becomes "marked" for possession after breaking into and investigating his late neighbor's apartment after she was murdered.  The entity harassing Jesse is the same malevolent force that claimed Kristi and Katie earlier in the franchise.

To clear the air I am a huge fan of the original Paranormal Activity.  I thought it was a breath of fresh air in the horror genre, but then in the continuation of the franchise, that air grew more and more stagnant.  That could not be more true for this stagnant, stale, more-greed-than-story movie.

The Marked Ones tries to be more than what it is.  To start off, it starts like any other Paranormal Activity movie.  It starts off with a happy atmosphere and takes about 15 minutes to get into the scares, well the attempts to scare.

When the film tries to scare, it can be seen a minute before the actual scare.  The only thing more frightening than the scenes in this movie were the underage girls screaming bloody murder in my theater.  Even more frightening was the attempt to copy the movie Chronicle with the super-powered demonic shoves.

This story is a carbon copy of the other installments of the franchise.  There is no new information added.  I feel like the producers are trying to drag it out as much as they can trying to figure where the hell they are headed with the wacky plot that started in the third film: the same old crazy cult bewitching children.

Now while the scares and story were full of spicy mexican-food-filled feces, there was one redeeming quality.  The quality that jumps out right away is that the acting was a step better than the last installment.  It still wasn't Tom Hanks worthy acting but it surely wasn't George Clooney's Batman.

So in conclusion, this movie is more about cashing in on the name of the Paranormal Activity franchise than giving the audience a clear-cut, great story.
